How It Works: Commissioning a Carving

1. Get in Touch

Call or message—whatever’s easiest.
Send a few photos and a bit of detail. If you’re not sure what you want, that’s fine—I’ll talk you through it.

2. Initial Look

I’ll look over the tree and the space.
We’ll go through your ideas—or I’ll suggest a few—and see what feels right. A visit can be arranged if needed.

3. Planning the Carving

We refine the design to suit the tree.
Once the bark comes off, hidden defects can show—this is normal and part of the process.
The design may evolve slightly as we go, but everything is discussed beforehand.

4. Quote & Timing

Once we’re on the same page, I’ll send over a quote and rough timeframe.

5. The Carving

The bark is removed to reveal the wood and shape the direction.
From there, the carving develops directly from the tree.
We can talk through progress as it evolves, and adjust if needed.

6. Finishing

The carving is refined through sanding, sometimes with light burning for detail.
A protective oil is applied to enhance and preserve the wood.

7. Completion & Payment

Once you’re happy, I’ll send over the invoice.

8. Aftercare

I recommend a check-in around 6–18 months, depending on the carving.
If you maintain it yourself, a light re-oil every 6–12 months is usually enough—but feel free to check in with me first.
I stay in touch with clients long after the job’s done, so if you ever need advice or a second opinion, just get in touch.
Carvings can be maintained, restored, or left to age naturally—it’s up to you.
